## Introduction to the RV lifestyle
Living the RV life is a dream for many adventurous souls. The freedom to travel wherever you desire, waking up to breathtaking landscapes, and embracing a minimalist lifestyle are just a few of the perks that come with this unconventional way of living. I can remember back to a time when Tina and I first realized that this full time RV lifestyle could be a reality for us. What an exciting time that was! In this article, we will dive deep into the world of RV life, exploring its pros and cons, planning tips, choosing the right RV, essential gear and equipment, budgeting, maintenance, and repairs, as well as connecting with the RV community and finding the best campgrounds for your adventures.
Pros and Cons of living the RV lifestyle
Like any other lifestyle, RV living has its fair share of advantages and disadvantages. One would be well advised to take adequate time to consider these before jumping in. If you make the wrong choices or if expectations aren’t set correctly; your dream could unexpectedly turn into a nightmare. On the bright side, living in an RV allows you to explore the world at your own pace, with the ability to change your backyard whenever you desire. It offers a sense of freedom that is hard to match. However, it’s important to consider the challenges that come with it. Limited space, constant maintenance, and the need to adapt to a different routine are some of the downsides. But with proper planning and a positive mindset, the pros far outweigh the cons, making RV life an extraordinary adventure. At least that’s been our experience.
Planning for an RV lifestyle
Before hitting the road, proper planning is crucial. Start by setting a budget and determining the duration of your RV adventure. Consider your travel preferences, whether you prefer boondocking in the wilderness or staying in RV parks with full amenities. In case you were wondering, ‘boondocking’ is the term used when you stay any place other than rv parks (i.e., parking lots, friend’s driveways, open wilderness, etc.) Whichever one you choose has its own demands and limits. For instance; if you plan on primarily using RV parks, you can pretty much forget about anything resembling privacy. In case you haven’t noticed, RV parks tend to pack campers in like sardines. That might work fine for some but certainly not for everyone. For someone who treasures their own space with peace and quiet; let’s just say that the honeymoon period could end up being a very short one. On the other hand, if you prefer life off of the beaten path then you must keep in mind that if you want it, you must bring it. Case in point; what do you do for power when you boondock? All RVs don’t come with a generator or a solar power system by default. Also, on that note you should be aware that generator use in most campgrounds is frowned upon at best. And even if the campground allows it, it is almost certain that your neighbors don’t prefer it. As long as you set your expectations appropriately and make suitable choices, you shouldn’t have too much trouble. Some other things to consider are; will you maintain residency in your current state or possibly set up residency in another state that has no state tax requirement? Research destinations, create a rough itinerary, and make a checklist of essential tasks such as mail forwarding, healthcare, and insurance. Remember, flexibility is key, so be prepared to adapt your plans as you discover new places and experiences along the way.
Choosing the right RV for your lifestyle
Selecting the perfect RV for your lifestyle is essential to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey. There are various types of RVs available, including travel trailers, motor-homes, and camper vans. Consider factors such as size, layout, and amenities when making your decision. Let’s take a moment to have a look at more specifics of the different types of RVs:
Travel Trailers
Some different types of travel trailers include 5th wheels, bumper pulls, each referring to how the trailer if physically connected to the tow vehicle. A 5th wheel is a disk-like platform which is installed in the bed of a pickup truck, whereas a bumper pull is attached to a ball hitch which is installed in the bumper of the tow vehicle. Some of the benefits of this type of RV are:
- A lot of space for a little money when compared to a motor home
- They can always be disconnected from the tow vehicle allowing for convenient transportation
- Usually have all of the amenities of home
Motor-homes
Motor-homes offer convenience and luxury, while travel trailers provide flexibility and affordability. There are several different types of motor-homes. If you’d like to take a deep-dive into the different types of motor-homes available, then take a look at THIS article which will help you to understand what they all mean. Take your time to research and test drive different models to find the one that suits your needs and preferences. I remember the first RV we purchased, it was a 30 foot bumper pull. On our first trip with it, our fuel economy was TERRIBLE! I remember thinking, “There is no way we are going to be able to afford travelling with this thing full time.” Not to mention getting around in traffic was quite stressful with 30 feet of trailer following us. Although it did provide a nice amount of space, (more than we needed, actually) it was not at all economical or convenient for the kind of travel we wanted to do. Needless to say, it wasn’t long before we traded our bumper pull in for a 24 foot Phoenix Cruizer 2400. It has been a dream to own and use and is nearly perfect for us. Essential gear and equipment for RV living
Equipping your RV with the necessary gear and equipment is vital for a smooth and comfortable life on the road. Start with the basics, such as leveling blocks, water hoses, and electrical adapters. Invest in quality camping chairs, a portable grill, and outdoor lighting to enhance your camping experience. Don’t forget about safety essentials like fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors, and a well-stocked first aid kit. Additionally, consider upgrading your RV with solar panels and a satellite system for a more sustainable and connected lifestyle.
RV life on a budget
Living the RV life doesn’t have to break the bank. With careful planning and budgeting, you can enjoy the freedom of the open road without draining your savings. Start by tracking your expenses and identifying areas where you can cut costs. Consider boondocking on public lands or joining RV clubs to access discounted camping fees. Cook your meals instead of eating out and take advantage of free or low-cost activities such as hiking, biking, and exploring local attractions. With a frugal mindset and a bit of creativity, you can make your RV life financially sustainable.
RV life maintenance and repairs
Just like any other home, RVs require regular maintenance and occasional repairs. Establish a maintenance routine to keep your RV in top shape. This includes checking the tires, inspecting the roof for leaks, and servicing the engine and generator. Familiarize yourself with basic repairs and learn how to troubleshoot common issues that may arise on the road. It’s also wise to have a reliable roadside assistance plan in place to provide peace of mind and assistance in case of emergencies. By staying proactive and addressing maintenance tasks promptly, you can avoid costly repairs and enjoy a worry-free RV life.
Capturing your RV adventures: YouTube and RV videos
Documenting your RV adventures through videos is a fantastic way to preserve memories and share your experiences with others. YouTube has become a popular platform for RV enthusiasts to showcase their journeys and provide valuable tips and advice. Invest in a good camera and microphone to ensure high-quality footage and audio. Plan your video content, focusing on topics that resonate with your audience, such as campground reviews, travel hacks, and RV maintenance tips. Engage with your viewers and create a community of fellow RV enthusiasts who can inspire and support one another on the road.
Connecting with the RV community
One of the most rewarding aspects of RV life is the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and build lasting friendships. Join online forums, social media groups, and RV clubs to meet fellow travelers and exchange valuable information. Attend RV rallies and gatherings to share stories, attend educational seminars, and participate in fun activities. Embrace the sense of community and camaraderie that comes with RV living, as it can greatly enrich your journey and provide a support system wherever you go.
Exploring the best RV-friendly campgrounds
Finding the perfect campground can make a significant difference in your RV experience. Research and explore different campgrounds that cater to RVs, considering factors such as location, amenities, and reviews from fellow RVers. National and state parks often offer stunning natural surroundings, while private RV parks provide full hookups and modern facilities. Look for campgrounds with activities and attractions that align with your interests, whether it’s hiking, fishing, or simply enjoying the tranquility of nature. Remember to book in advance, especially during peak seasons, to secure your spot and avoid disappointment.
Embracing the freedom of the open road
The true essence of RV life lies in embracing the freedom and adventure that comes with life on the open road.
